Ok, I feed live.. I know I know but.... I was wondering what to to do if and I say IF a rat bites during constricting. Do I put antibiotic on it?

I had a male ball get attacked by a mouse and got bitting up a little and I used Chlorhexiderm to wash it and keep it clean and there was no scaring.I have heard some folks say not to use neosporin.I dont remeber why but they did and that is just what i have heard. And you know how that goes.I would say just keep it clean and it should/would be fine..

forgot to add I fed nothing live rodents anymore.Except for pinkies and so on..lol..Man that would be a scary thought to sit there and watch some high end snake get attacked but a dollar rodent....

I have personally never seen the need to medicate the wound as long as it does seem to be healing and not getting worse. If it would just make you feel better, a little neosporin(sp?) will help it heal on up.

I've only had this happen once and at the time I just soaked the snake afterwards and rubbed the wound in neosporin. It should heal and after a few sheds it should go away :)

It depends on how bad the wound is, if its just one bite, no need to medicate, but ive seen some snakes chewed to the spine, and they need meds at that point.

Sometimes what will help is to make sure that the mouse/rat has eaten before it goes into the snakes cage. If it is starving it is more likely to bite. I feed my ball live prey and he has never been bitten.*fingers crossed*

if its bad enough i put iodine on it just to help out. now i feed dead, and my snakes have no scars

My personal opinion is to clean it with H202 or betadine) and then neosporin on it for a few days, just to be safe.

best way to be honist is to smack the rat on the head befor feeding it to the snake
saves on scars
and makes a realy satisfying SLAT noise at the same time

I'm not going to preach about the whole live vs. frozen thing but I will tell you a liittle story. My lab wasn't but a year old and I fed him a small rat, which I thought was knocked out, he was bitten on the top of the head clost to his left jowl. If the rat would have bitten farther into the head my lab wouldn't be here now. That's why I feed frozen. I used an antibiotic cream and it took alot more than a couple of sheds for the scar to go away. it took almost 2 yrs.
